Why it's needed

Conditions that lead to ankle replacement

Ankle replacement is recommended when the joint is severely damaged and non-surgical treatments such as physiotherapy, injections, or bracing have failed to provide adequate relief. The following conditions are the most common reasons patients require this procedure.

Osteoarthritis

The most common cause, where the cartilage gradually wears away leaving bone rubbing against bone. This causes relentless pain, stiffness, and significant loss of mobility that severely impacts daily life.

Post-traumatic arthritis

Arthritis that develops years after a serious ankle fracture or ligament injury, even when the original injury was treated correctly. The joint surface deteriorates over time, leading to pain and stiffness that worsens with activity.

Rheumatoid arthritis

An autoimmune condition that attacks the joint lining, causing progressive inflammation, deformity, and destruction of the ankle joint. When medication can no longer control symptoms, replacement offers lasting structural relief.

Avascular necrosis

A condition where the blood supply to the talus bone is disrupted, causing the bone tissue to collapse and the joint surface to break down. Replacement rebuilds the joint and prevents further structural deterioration.
